The first thing I noticed about this apartment is its strong retro personality. It’s very charming, but also very dominant. The owner, a young bachelor, is a serial traveller and collector of items from around the world. I needed to find a way to tell his story without clashing with the apartment’s own unique story.
I decided to fill the apartment with natural, tame elements that complement the unique vintage vibe. I restored an antique armchair using natural brown leather. I added white curtains to soften the dominant windows. I purchased two oversized, gorgeous green plants that made the space feel bigger. I decorated the area with the owner’s novelty collections: two elephant statues purchased in India and a colorful Cambodian painting of Tibetan nuns. Finally, I added a vintage record player as a nod to the retro feels.
The outcome was an eclectic space that reflected the owner’s personality, without clashing with the apartment’s natural aura.
It also made the living room the center of the home. This was a must: the owner loves to host, but the dining area in the apartment is too small for dinner parties. The living room has space, and is now the best spot in the home for guests. Win-win!
The other big challenge here was storage space: or really, the lack thereof. I had to get creative. I used special storage solutions to hide cleaning supplies behind the door to the bedroom, and purchased a bed with built-in drawers below it. In the kitchen I added a library, which looked like a decorative piece but is secretly (and partly) an additional space. And it worked: no part of the apartment feels cluttered, and the owner has everything he needs.
