In this case I entered an existing project in which I designed four spaces: the kitchen, living room, guest room and bathroom. Since one of the owners is an artist, I wanted to keep most of the space clean and let her creations do the talking. The white, beige, black and gray backdrop we created enabled her colorful paintings and statues to shine.
I decided to create an entirely white, symmetrical kitchen which was handle-less and had camouflage shelving. It would work seamlessly with the clean look of the apartment.
The tameness of the kitchen allowed for us to make louder choices in the living room. I refurbished the owner’s armchairs from the 1950s and paired these with a more modern couch. In the center I placed a delicate, thin coffee table to balance out the heaviness of the aniques.
The guestroom is very small, but is in constant use. The couple hosts their kids and grandkids all the time, so their space is very important. Similarly to the kitchen, I hid all storage and electrical wires within the walls and created a clean, white space. The room immediately felt more spacious.
For the bathroom, I decided to mimic the stone floor theme that exists throughout the rest of the house. By making the walls of the room a stone color, I turned the entire room into a kind of monotone space that perfectly highlights the sophisticated centerpiece of the room - a statue handcrafted by the owner.
